Land of the Free(ish)

"Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter."~ Martin Luther King Jr.

Today is the day our country celebrates Martin Luther King Jr. and as I sit around eating pancakes with my family (Papa makes delicious pancakes!), I find myself thinking about the man who told the world of his dreams.  I admire him.  Its hard not to.  What he did in America, for America, was amazing.  But what is even more amazing to me is how relevant so much of his message is STILL.

"Our scientific power has outrun our spiritual power. We have guided missiles and misguided men."  ~ MLK

While we can choose on this day to read (or listen to) some of his words and take  them at face-value, feeling smug and proud that some of his dreams have come true, it would be failing his memory and our country if we fail to acknowledge that so much of what Martin Luther King, Jr. fought for has failed to come to fruition.

Racism, hatred, discrimination are still very much alive and well.  A black man may now drink from the same fountain as a white man, or sit next to a white man on a bus.  But Americans everywhere are loosing freedoms First1, Fourth 2, Fifth 3, Sixth4, Eighth5 and Fourteenth 6 Amendment rights are increasingly sacrificed in the name of anti-terrorism.

Homosexual, Trans-gender, and Bisexual Americans are discriminated against everywhere, every day.

Arabs and Muslims are profiled, held and deported with no or little cause; they suffer the effects of racism continuously; even from our government.

"The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character - that is the goal of true education."   ~ MLK

The education our youngest citizens receive fails them more each minute as programs are cut, teachers are restricted, and fear, hate and ignorance over-power the ideas of intelligence and character.

"Nonviolence means avoiding not only external physical violence but also internal violence of spirit. You not only refuse to shoot a man, but you refuse to hate him." ~MLK

And the idea of nonviolence, of loving our fellow human beings, has been replaced with fear.  Good people continue to remain quiet in the face of injustice, and ignorance is still very much alive.

So, today, I choose to speak out against injustice, violence, hatred and fear.  Because that check promised to us by our Founding Fathers is still marked insufficient funds. Because the dream did not, and should not, die with the man.  Because America should be the land of the free; not the land of the free-ish.

6.  Fourteenth Amendment:  Interpreted as protecting the rights of all citizens providing equal protection to minority citizens.

WFMW: Holiday Gifting on a Budget!

Works For Me Wednesday is hosted by We Are That Family.  Click on the graphic at the bottom of this post to check it out.

I was hesitant to do this post because there is already just. so. much. good information out there.  But, in the end, I decided that maybe, just maybe one of you would have an "ah ha!" moment, or giggle, or run off and tell everyone what a goober I am... anyway, as long as you're happy, I'm happy.  Right?

Right.

In case you're new here, or you just don't pay attention, I have been a stay-at-home-mom since I was pregnant with Punkin'... what's that, now?  Almost six years.  (oh my! how the time does fly).  So money's been tight around here for awhile.  Living on one income requires some creative thinking, especially when it comes to holidays when over-spending can be very easy to do.  I am now also a full-time student which strains the finances even further.  So, being careful about what we spend at Christmas time is vital in our house.  Here's what works for us.

MM #9: Thankful

Not what we say about our blessings, but how we use them, is the true measure of our thanksgiving.
~W.T. Purkiser

Thanksgiving is awesome for so many reasons:  the food, the time with family, taking time to remember what we are thankful for in our lives.

Now that Thanksgiving is passed, I hope you enjoyed your time with family, and took that time to really acknowledge the things you are thankful for.

If a tree falls in the forest...

I was thinking today...  If you don't post for over a year can you still call yourself a blogger?  Is your dusty old blog still *actually* a blog?  Who am I to keep this blog from fulfilling its purpose?  I mean, all it wants to do is look pretty and have some (hopefully) clever posts on it.  How hard could that be really?

Its not like there were no blog-worthy events over the last year.  There were plenty!

There was the trip to Disneyland...

Easter Sunday

Easter morning we woke up, talked to the girls a bit about the Easter Bunny, and then opened baskets. The Bunny was very generous this year (even though he thought he was only getting them a few things). Their baskets had fairy wings and skirts, Koosh-type balls, purses, cute little flip-flops with sparkles and polka dots, books, stickers, head-bands, eggs that "hatch" when placed in water for a few days; Punkin' got a big bubble wand and even two pieces of candy! They loved it!

Easter Saturday Brunch

Easter Saturday brunch is another one of our neighborhood's traditions. More succinctly, another wonderful thing that S and W do for the neighborhood. For those of you not in the know; S and W are our neighbors, to the right if you're standing in the street and looking at our house (and while you're there, please ignore the empty flower bed between the two houses, the leaves that I STILL haven't cleaned out from Fall, and the fact that our lawn is about 10 inches too tall).

S and W are true neighbors, always saying "hi" when passing, truly interested in the lives of those around them and always willing to help in any way they can. In fact, since I haven't mowed the lawn in a few weeks I'm expecting W to knock on the door any minute now and ask if he can mow it. Yes, you read that right.

Every year on the Saturday before Easter they host a brunch for their neighbors. The festivities start around 11:30am with mimosas and bellinis, around noon the men go outside and re-live their childhood by finding creative ways to hide all the eggs S and W have purchased and filled with money and candy, followed shortly by the children who run around finding them all and filling their baskets.

Once all the eggs have been found, and the booty inventoried, the feast begins! Now, let me tell you, this is no ordinary brunch and I will attempt to describe it for the unfortunate folks who don't get to see, and taste the bounty of delicious food, but words are failing me as I remember the sights, smells and tastes from Saturday afternoon.
While mimosas are being sipped, the neighbors chit-chatting, and children scrambling around searching for eggs to fill their baskets, S is cooking. Or rather, this year, S and Papa were cooking. Scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, blueberry and cinnamon-raisin french toast; bagels with cream cheese, smoked salmon, hard boiled eggs, red onion and capers; sliced ham, cheese, rolls, melons, pineapple, asparagus with roasted red peppers, and baked ziti. We all brought food, as well. C, their neighbor to the other side, made a egg and chorizo pie, H (across the street) make macaroni and cheese, and Papa made a delicious salad - greens with sliced strawberries and toasted pine nuts and a strawberry puree pomegranate vinaigrette. mmmmm...
But the pièce de résistance is S’s "apple pancakes." Now before you think pancake and picture some flat thing that you throw butter and syrup on - STOP! That is not what these are. These are sliced apples in cinnamon and sugar slowly simmered and then finally covered with a layer of batter and baked in the oven....these are perfection. There was more...so much more, but my memory is failing me and, quite frankly, all I ever remember well is those darned pancakes.
Once we've all filled our plates and then our bellies, its time for dessert: Cupcakes, cookies, little cheese-cake bites, and a home-made parfait that I always forget to leave room for.
We sat around, ate and chatted with the neighbors until the little one was falling down and the big one started crying over everything. And then we headed home for naps.
It was great! So great, in fact, that I’m already looking forward to next year.
